If you would like to be a model for our figure drawing class here are the particulars:

-Please send photos (doesn’t have to be anything fancy, just something so I can remember your face and get an idea of your body type).

-Include any previous experience with figure modeling (or let me know if you are just starting- have you been to a figure class?) and personal references that may apply to figure modeling. 

-The next step is to attend one of the figure classes. It’s important to observe how we run the class, and what is required of the model. We are there every Thursday from 8-10pm. Just let me know what day you plan to show up, I am there from 7:45 until 10:15 or so. I should have a few minutes to talk before class or at the break at 9pm.


-Directions and free parking info are at the bottom of this page.

  • Models are paid $50 (cash) for the two hour session.
  • Class is from 8-10:00pm, please arrive ten minutes early.
  • The poses are full nude.
  • You should bring a robe for the break and to use for a seat/stage cover.
  • Feel free to bring any props you like, though none are needed.
  • We try to keep a loose, friendly environment with music.
  • You are welcome to bring music if you like, or I will provide it.
8:00-8:20  (18) One minute poses, try to keep them expressive  and  dynamic. I will keep time.
8:20-8:40  (9) Two minute poses, same description.
8:40-9:00  (5) Four minute poses, same description, then take a  15  minute break.
9:15-9:25  Ten minute pose. Choose your own pose. I will keep  time .
9:25-9:40  Fifteen minute pose. Choose your own pose. I will  keep time.
9:40-10:00  Twenty minute pose. Choose your own pose. I will  keep time.

The figure class is held from 8-10 PM.

Joe’s Figure Model Notes 2016

1- Be on time. You are expected to arrive 10-15 minutes before class, give yourself plenty of time in case of traffic or other delays. There are artists waiting on you, and being late adds stress to my responsibilities.

2- Be professional. You are being paid to be on time and in good spirits when class begins. Your attitude and demeanor directly affect the artists- remember that you are here to serve and inspire them.

3- Be a muse. People model for many different reasons, but the best one is to inspire the artists. Do your best to inspire them with your creativity, discipline and intention. The payback comes from the work that you inspire in the artists, and the relationships that spring from that work.

4- Be decisive. Especially with the shorter poses, the artists are working under tight time constrictions. The idea is for the artist to capture the entire figure in one minute, so we depend on you to find a pose quickly and hold it! I add in about six seconds for the model transitions once we get going. So be thinking of your next pose as the time runs down, get in the next position quickly and hold it. The best way to keep your position is to lock your gaze wherever it falls. Don’t look around the room, as that causes your head, and body, to “drift”.

5- Be creative. Every model is different, and therefore every model has different poses and different styles. We love that! Bring your personality into your poses, whether it comes from a dancing background, sports, yoga, theater or accounting! Some of the best poses come from a series that acts out a specific action in several poses. Think of the series of poses in advance, and you can quickly move through them. This also helps the artists draw sequentially. You may bring props if you like, although none are necessary (do bring a robe for the break and to use as a drape for seated poses). We like to keep any props simple for the quick drawings as there is not much time for drawing extra detail. A staff is an excellent prop- you can lean on it, drape your arms over it, or hurl it at the artists for dramatic effect! (Well, pretend to hurl it…)

6- Be studious. Our best models study other artists and models from books and the web to find ways to improve their poses. Some plan all of their poses out before the class, while others improvise as they go along. Either way, it is important to keep learning and not settle on the same poses. That gets boring for you and the artists.

7- Be interesting. There are technical things that you can do to make your poses more interesting. Add twists to your pose; for instance, if your hips are facing left, then twist your shoulders to the right. This adds dynamics, even more so if you drop one hip and raise the shoulder on the same side.

Consider how interesting the pose is to the artist. Don’t just stand flat to the group with all your limbs at the same angle. Posing in a tight ball leaves just your back or the top of your head to view, and is not interesting. Remember to revolve as you pose, so that the artists get different views. Use a chair or our short stairs to pose on. Find creative ways to sit or lay across them to create inverted poses.

Another example is hands- they add great dimension and articulation. Look at a ballet dancer’s hands, they are always accentuating the pose. Hands can signal intention, which is another useful tool. What is your intention with the pose? Are you angry? The fist is balled up. Are you scared? The hands are clutched to your chest. Happy? Hands are outstretched.

These are only examples, remember that often it is best to just relax and let your body be at rest. One model did a great series of poses talking on an older “princess” phone with a cord. She could wind the cord around her arms and even create different facial expressions during her “conversation”, acting as though she were painting her toenails or looking in the mirror as she was talking.

8- Be nice. During the break and afterwards, feel free to look at the artists work. We have artists of all levels and abilities, from professional to student and expert to beginners. Figure drawing is hard, and even with many years of drawing I still struggle with it. Encourage the beginners, and compliment the artists whose work you like. You will be surprised how many will be happy to let you photograph their work, or even give you drawings!

9- Help other models. Seek out other models. They are brave to stand naked in front of strangers, and are interesting people. Encourage new models, and learn from more experienced ones. Create networks- often models can refer good friends when they need to reschedule and it helps everyone. They can recommend good teachers and classes, and warn of bad ones.

10- Visit the class. It’s a great way to get acquainted with the space and the structure of the class. Feel free to sit in the back and observe the artists and model at work. I am available before the class, at the 9pm break or after the class if you have questions, or just to introduce yourself. I look forward to meeting you!
